After months without going to the movies, today we went back again. The cinema in West Mall used to be Eng Wah but now it was renovated and is run by Cathay Cineplexes. The theatres are really improved with better screens, sound quality and seats.
We saw the movie Planes with the kids and were quite pleased. If you liked Cars then you will likely enjoy Planes since the whole story is mostly the same with planes replacing cars. Dusty Crophopper is a cropduster plane designed to work in the corn fields. He dreams to be a racer. After weeks of training he participates of the qualifiers and get ridiculised by the competition. With a bit of luck he makes it to the world tournament. After a sloppy start, he improves over the races and gets the respect of other planes and supporters. The ending is quite expected. The story evolves with nice pace to follow and understand, the visual effects are well done. The kids loved the movie and we had great fun.
We give 4 out of 5 for Planes.

Change up
This movie describes the story of a famous lawyer that has made a fantastic career, is married and have 3 kids and is incredibly devoted to work and his best friend, who is a failure in life, never married, has not achieved anything and play some small roles in soft porn; he is also a fan of marijuana and sex with random ladies. One day they go out together, drink a lot, smoke some pot, have fun and pee on a fountain while saying they wanted to have the other guys' life. When they wake up next morning they are in the body of the other guy. What follows is a sequence of funny and embarrassing moments when they try to play the role of other guy. This movie is not suitable for the young cause there are a number of bare boobies and also strong sexual content and strong language which is totally over the top. But a mature audience will find it entertaining.
I give 3 out of 5 for Change up.

What is your number?
This movie is hilarious for those who understand the jokes, which are mostly of sexual content. It is about a single lady who's younger sister is getting married and she still hasn't found the one even after having 20 sexual partners. She now tries to find about her ex boyfriends to see whether any would still be available. She receives the help of a single male neighbour who has been sleeping with a different girl every evening. Most of her ex boyfriends are now married but some have big issues and things don't look good. Every evening she comes back and talks to her neighbour about all the failures until one day they fall in love with each other and end up together forever. Some of the audience was laughing at the jokes and I found myself entertained all along and even catching myself laughing hours after the movie.
I give 3.5 out of 5 for What is your number?

Johnny English Reborn
Rowan Atkinson once again delivers in this incredibly funny comedy. He is a secret agent who has failed 5 years back in a mission in Mozambique. He spends years with monks learning martial arts and trying to find some peace. When English is called back to action he finds himself trying to uncover a plot to kill the chinese premier. What follows is a movie full of funny moments, in which he makes full use of the technique he has learned with the monks. The movie was entertaining to me and to the audience in the theatre.
I give 3.5 out of 5 for Johnny English.

Bad Teacher
Bad teacher is a movie in which the title represents what you would expect. Cameron Diaz does all sort of bad things and get away with everything till the very end. At some stage I was hoping she would be punished somehow but ended up on top and even got the nice physical education teacher. Poor Amy does all the correct things and always loses at every occasion. The movie is entertaining but not suitable for the young because of drug abuse and strong sexual language and somewhat sexual content.
I give 3 out of 5 for Bad teacher.

Conan the Barbarian
Went tot he theatre to see Conan and was heavily disappointed. The movie is quite bad, the story line is weak and the conversations have poor substance. Around the middle of the movie I was already expecting it to end. The fact that part of the audience was playing with their iphones reflects the level of interest. The movie contains a huge amount of violence but that would be expected from a barbarian. Conan is a warrior from the time where barbarians and nasty kings ruled the world. Conan goes around doing good and bad things and eventually face the man who killed his father. He wins the battle against this brutal enemy who wanted to use a legendary mask to dominate all peoples.
I give 3 out of 5 for Conan the barbarian.

Cowboys & Aliens
After a long time without watching movies in the cinema we are back and hope to start writing weekly reviews again. I went to the theatre with low expectations, after all, what to expect from a movie in which aliens attack a small town in the middle of nowhere and the local cowboys fight them back holding regular pistols and ridding horses? This movie had a number of interesting features with bandits, bad people, good people and native indians all holding guns and fighting each other. Interestingly there would always be an alien attack just before things got out of hand. And the enemies would unite against the aliens - a much stronger and uglier looking creatures. All in all the movie goes with a fast pace and I felt entertained till the very last minute.
I give 4 out of 5 for Cowboys & Aliens.
